What is soil?

The oldest of all the growing methods used by generation after generation of people around the world. Simply put, soil/compost is comprised of various ingredients that provide a healthy environment for plants to grow.

Potting mixes have several basic components that may be included in your potting soil such as organic plant or animal-based materials like peat or bat guano. There may also be inorganic natural materials like perlite and vermiculite which help to provide aeration, improve drainage, and retain moisture. The other key part of a soil is the fertilisers and other additives such as beneficial microbes, and wetting agents.

Over time, the organic ingredient in soil decomposes, resulting in compaction and a loss of nutrients causing root rot and drainage issues. Using dedicated earth nutrients can help maintain the balance between nutrient load and biological life.
